About the Conference


Over the past two decades, the Korean Wave (Hallyu) has evolved from a regional cultural phenomenon into a powerful global cultural force. From K-pop and K-dramas to fashion, beauty, and online content, Korean popular culture has profoundly influenced youth, subcultures, and consumer practices across the Global South. What was once a niche interest has now become a transcultural and digital ecosystem of affect, identity, resistance, and global belonging.


This international conference seeks to critically explore how the Korean Wave travels, transforms, and takes root in various cultural contexts of the Global South. In particular, the conference aims to understand the transcultural dynamics of fandom, digital intimacy, neo-tribalism, and the formation of hybrid cultural identities in countries across Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. The Korean Wave is not merely consumed—it is localized, politicized, and reimagined in youth communities and online spaces, sparking unique forms of fan activism, cultural negotiation, and creative expression.


The conference, titled International Conference on the Transcultural Dynamics of the Korean Wave in the Global South, will be held from July 17, 2026, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, National University of Singapore. It is organized by the K-Culture Story Contents Research Institute, Kyung Hee University, in collaboration with the National University of Singapore and SIMEC Research Center, Singapore.


We invite original papers from academics, researchers, students, and practitioners whose work and interests engage with the cultural, social, and political dimensions of the Korean Wave in the Global South. Papers may address one or more of the following key themes:

About the Conference


It has been eight years since the ever-largest Rohingya refugee influx of nearly a million in Bangladesh. Bangladesh has generously sheltered the Rohingya in Cox’s Bazar, which houses the largest refugee camp in the world. As a year goes by, the complexity of the Rohingya crisis and the impact of the Rohingya refugees on Bangladesh are compounding; the Rohingya are living in confinement with limited basic amenities provided by international humanitarian organizations. Not getting the required funds or the gradual fund-cutting for the Rohingya responses are pushing humanitarian organizations to suspend their activities in the camps, which is severely impacting the lives of the Rohingya. As a precarious situation for the Rohingya prevails in the camps in Bangladesh, the potential of their repatriation to Myanmar becomes bleak due to the ongoing fighting between the Myanmar military and the ethnic Rakhine nationalist Arakan Army.


Against this background and in the context of the changing nature of international politics, engaging with the existing scholarships, policies, and practices is imperative to finding or imagining new ways to bring sustainable solutions to the Rohingya crisis. With this aim, SIMEC Research Center, Singapore, in collaboration with SIMEC Institute of Technology, Bangladesh, is organizing a one-day conference on “Sustainable Solutions to the Rohingya Crisis: Policies and Practices” from 20 December 2025.


We invite abstracts of original papers, panel proposals, and workshop ideas from government and NGO officials, practitioners, researchers, academics, humanitarian professionals, activists and journalists on the following themes, but not limited to:

About the Conference


The blue economy has immense potential to drive the growth of Bangladesh. If appropriately utilized, the blue economy sector may contribute more than 5% of Bangladesh’s GDP. In addition to aquaculture, fisheries, tourism, renewable ocean energy makes a considerable sector for exploring the market for Blue Economy development in Bangladesh. Renewable ocean energy, in particular, is emerging as a major sector globally, attracting significant investments in wave, tidal, and offshore wind projects. For Bangladesh, tapping into these resources can accelerate sustainable economic growth in Bangladesh.


This international conference serves as a crucial platform to exploring the potential of the blue economy in Bangladesh’s overall economic growth. It brings industry, government, and research partners together to initiate a dialogue on the need for market exploration, research and innovation, resource mobilization, engagement, and collaboration. These elements are crucial to developing a comprehensive and inclusive ocean governance policy, all with a focus on national interest and development.


The conference, which is a follow-up event of the DFAT funded capacity-building initiative under the Australia Awards Fellowship on Improving Research and Policy in the Blue Economy in Bangladesh, primarily aims to understand and explore the potential of the blue economy in the overall growth of Bangladesh. Among the invited dignitaries, representatives from the Energy & Mineral Resources Division of the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources, Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI), Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock have already confirmed their participation as speakers.


The speaker line-up also includes Emeritus Professor Dr Richard Bawden and Ms Tami Harriott from the University of the Sunshine Coast (UniSC), Australia, Australia Awards Fellows, other government officials, academicians/researchers, and media professionals closely working on/involved with the blue economy.

Australia Awards Short Courses facilitate professional growth of individuals in Bangladesh and the South Asia region by providing opportunities for skill development that directly addresses key development issues.

Government officers engaged in the health sector of Bangladesh participated in a training program in Australia. In order to showcase their learning outcomes, they presented their Return to Work Plans reports in the post-course Applied Learning Activities conference at the Australia Awards Office in Dhaka from 11th September, 2023 to 13th September, 2023

A Two-day international conference on

Role of Media & Communicationin Achieving Sustainable DevelopmentGoals (SDGs) in South Asia

The term “development” became the buzzword in the developing countries, whereas often the prescription toward development has been developed by the developed world. South Asia as a region in cartographic and political senses, consisting of eight developing countries, namely Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, has been grappling with the concept of “sustainability” and “development” for long, particularly in the political terrain. In this milieu, it is pertinent to refer to the UN General Assembly Resolution 70/1 on September 2015 calling out the global agenda for transforming our world “the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”. Needless to say that implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) remains crucial which should be measured and identified at the global, regional, subregional, national, and local levels. Prior to the implementation, it is essential to understand the local context and local meanings of “development,” politics, and polemics within and beyond so as to customize the strategy according to the local/regional realities. In this regard, mass media comprising news, entertainment, and infotainment, as a tool of development communication, broadly an institution of socialization with the feature of remaining close to life and limelight, can be taken into consideration to perceive the pulse of people, reach extensively ranging from people to policymakers and impact the contextualized message of SDGs intensively with potentially acceptable dimensions of development to implement with a view to maintaining sustainability. Considering the potential of media within the socio-economic, cultural, and political ground of South Asia, this endeavour aims to assess the contemporary media performance with respect to achieving SDGs and propose a set of pragmatic imperatives for the media stakeholders to function effectively in this regard. It is also imperative to examine how the SDGs as concept, practice and project have been communicated to the stakeholders and public at large. Engaging the media experts, practitioners, academicians, activists and policymakers, the proposed conference aims to offer a platform for inclusive policy dialogue and interactive sessions for a better understanding of the SDGs in South Asia. Papers are invited from scholars on the following themes but not limited to:
